Medical Evaluations in the Field of Forensic Toxicology
Dr. Brautbar performs medical evaluations that are used in the field of forensic toxicology to better understand the presence of toxic substances found in the body. Toxic substances in blood and tissue samples are analyzed to determine their contribution to a crime or accident. These substances may include alcohol, poisons, drugs, gases, metals and other harmful chemicals.
In cases where the affected individuals are living, a comprehensive patient exam is performed. The examination includes a consultation and a discussion of medical records, and test results, Physicians will administer a complete history and physical examination. After the examination, the forensic toxicologist will make a recommendations for further tests, procedures and treatments.
While forensic toxicology can identify harmful substances in the body, a thorough medical analysis is necessary to obtain the best course of action for each individual case. For example, when testing individuals for the presence of illegal or prescription drugs, cases will be analyzed to better understand the situation. The presence of drugs used to enhance athletic performance would warrant a different course of action from the presence of drugs which lead to date-rape. With instances of overdosing and poisoning, medical evaluations can determine the best way to help treat the affected individuals.
